On our Snæfellsnes Private Jeep Tour with Arnarstapi and Kirkjufell Mountain you can experience the beauty of Snaefellsnes, often referred to as “Iceland in a nutshell”. Lava fields, mountain peaks, black and golden beaches, lighthouses, picturesque fishing villages, waterfalls, and sea-cliffs and much more.
Our Snæfellsnes Private Jeep Tour starts with a pick-up from your accommodation in Reykjavik. We then drive north to Gerðuberg, a monumental basalt wall that is approximately 15 meters tall and was created in the cooling process of lava.
We then continue our tour to Ytri-Tunga beach which is one of the best spots for observing seals in West Iceland. There is a seal colony that usually hangs out here so it is common to see these cute animals resting on the rocks. Snaefellsnes is also the perfect place for bird and whale-watching.
Our next stop is the black wooden church in Buðir, a popular and famous attraction on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. This is one of the few wooden black churches in Iceland and one of the most popular photo locations on Snæfellsnes.
We continue out private Snæfellsnes tour by driving along the diverse coastline of the peninsula and discovering popular tourist attractions as well as hidden gems.
Before we will reach the tip of the peninsula and Snæfellsjökull National Park, we visit the charming village of Arnarstapi, where you can take a walk along the rocky sea-cliffs with this characteristic basalt columns, These cliffs host a large variety of bird species during the summer months and are a great place for bird watchers and nature lovers. A 2 km path among spectacular lava formations connects Arnarstapi to Hellnar and it is possible to walk there.
Arnarstapi is located at the foot of the majestic Snæfellsjökull, a glacier-topped volcano that is famous worldwide also thanks to Julius Verne's novel Journey to the Center of the Earth. Snæfellsjökull is one of Iceland's most famous and most beautiful glaciers that can be explored with an exciting snow-cat tour run by a partner company. This tour is only available from April/May to August and it doesn't run every day. If you are interested in a snow-cat tour on the glacier, please let us know and we will check the options for you.
We continue our Snæfellsnes Private Jeep Tour to the beautiful black beach of Dritvík in Djúpalónssandur, and to the fascinating Lóndrangar, where basalt volcanic dikes stick out from the sea almost looking like a lava castle.
The last stop of our Sæfellsnes Private Jeep Tour is the famous Kirkjufell, the church mountain, Iceland's most photographed mountain that was also featured in the HBO's series Game Of Thrones. Here you have time to walk to Kirkjufellsfoss to take the iconic photograph of the waterfall with the Kirkjufell in the background.
If time allows, we will make some additional stops at the beautiful Rauðfeldsgjá Gorge, Saxhóll Volcanic Crater and Bersekjahraun Lava Field between the towns of Grundarfjörður and Stykkishólmur.
If you take the tour in the winter (September to March) you might be lucky and be able to spot some Northern Lights dancing in the skies on the way back to Reykjavik, with the right weather conditions.
